Bobcats Head To Detroit For Mac

Nov 17, 2011 From staff reports Junior kicker Matt Weller connected on a 23-yard field goal as time expired to give the Ohio University football team a thrilling 29-28 victory at Doyt Perry Stadium Wednesday night. With the Bobcats' win and Miami University's 24-21 loss, Ohio clinched the Mid-American Conference East title and will play in the league championship game on Friday, Dec. 2, at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. Weller converted a career-high five field goals on the evening as the Bobcats improved to 8-3 overall, 5-2 in the MAC, while Bowling Green drops to 4-7 overall, 2-5 in conference play. Ohio trailed 28-19 early in the fourth quarter, but battled back to score the final 10 points for the victory.

A four-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Tettleton cut the lead to 28-26 with 11:44 left in the fourth quarter, setting up the game-winning kick. Tettleton finished the game with 194 yards passing and rushed for a career-high 128 yards on the ground. He found the end zone twice, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another.

Bowling Green opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass from Matt Schilz to tight end Tyler Beck for a 7-0 lead with 11:23 left in the first quarter. Ohio scored the next ten points as Weller nailed a 31-yard field goal with 2:43 left in the first quarter before Tettleton found LaVon Brazill in the corner of the end zone for a 24-yard score to open a 10-7 lead with 11:51 left in the second frame. Bowling Green regained the lead with a six-yard scoring pass from Schilz to wide receiver Kamar Jorden for a 14-10 lead at the 7:50 mark in the second frame.

Weller converted his second and third field goals of the half, his second from 39 yards with 1:27 left in the half, and his third with a 24-yard chip shot on the final play of the half to give the Bobcats the 16-14 halftime lead. Integral in this final scoring play was an 81-yard interception return by Travis Carrie that set the Green and White up at Bowling Green's seven-yard line.

Weller converted his fourth field goal of the game, a season-long 49-yarder to give the Bobcats a 19-14 lead in the third quarter. Bowling Green regained the lead at the 7:38 mark of the third quarter on a nine-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a four-yard touchdown run by running back Anthon Samuel to take a 21-19 lead. The Falcons added to the lead with a 10-play, 70-yard drive capped by a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Schilz to receiver Eugene Cooper for a 28-19 lead with 13:41 left in regulation before Ohio scored the final ten points of the game to secure the victory. Ohio returns to action next Tuesday, Nov. 22, as it welcomes Miami to Peden Stadium for the Battle of the Bricks. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
